This is an aspect of WordPress that I’ve had numerous questions about. When I first started blogging here, I had over 20 categories. I found out that with 20 categories, it was really easy to get mixed up with post topics.
- I had 5 categories with at least 100 posts in each. When I reviewed the posts, some of them really didn’t fit in where I put them.
- I also had categories where I had only 1 to 5 posts. I found that most of these posts could fit into other categories that I had.
Most experts say that a blog should have no more than 3 to 5 categories. Personally, I just couldn’t work everything into 3 to 5 categories. They also tell you to go sparingly on tags. I have 10 categories, and I must admit that I go wild with tags sometimes. I use only one category for each post, and I try my best to use between 3 and 5 tags on my posts.
I found this video that was extremely helpful. It details the pro’s and con’s of categories and tags, and how to use them to increase your blog’s SEO (Search Engine Optimization).
